Residents of Sisdole, in the Nuwakot district, who had been obstructing waste disposal at a landfill site there, have decided to stop.
The landfill collects almost all of the solid waste collected in the Kathmandu valley. Since March 26, garbage has been stinking in every nook and cranny of the valley due to the obstruction.
According to KMC Environment Department Chief Hari Kumar Shrestha, the Kathmandu metropolitan city and leaders of the agitators met in Kathmandu today, during which the protestors decided to end the blockade.
The protesters demanded that the local governments dispose of their waste there and provide funding for the recruitment of additional teachers at local schools. During today’s talks, the Kathmandu metropolitan city agreed to provide support for 51 teachers before the federal government hires more.
In the meantime, the city council has pledged to develop facilities for a 15-bed hospital in the district. However, since this is unlikely to happen soon, the two parties decided to find other ways to guarantee locals’ access to health care.
The Kakani rural municipality of Nuwakot and the Dhunibesh municipality of Dhading will each receive Rs 30 million for various development projects next year, according to the agreement.
