Due to concerns of a second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic, a meeting of district officials held on Sunday agreed that the jatra would not be held this year. The jatra was also canceled last year for the same reason.
When the decision was taken, the locals had already begun work on a rath (chariot) for the festival. According to Chief District Officer Prem Prasad Bhattarai, a simple worshipping practice is still permitted.
Every year, thousands of people from all over Kathmandu come to participate in the jatra.
Due to the pandemic last year, several other typical Kathmandu jatras were canceled, postponed, or reduced to the bare essentials. As the festival season kicks off, many people are worried that the restrictions will be repeated this year.
