President Bidya Devi Bhandari signed the Citizenship (First Amendment) Ordinance on Sunday in Kathmandu.
According to a source, the Citizenship Ordinance provides for the provision of “citizenship by descent” to offspring of Nepali nationals who gained citizenship by birthright. It also responds to Madesh-centric parties’ demands.
Citizenship by descent was not previously available to children of Nepali nationals who had gained citizenship by birth.
To address the demand of Madhesh-centric groups, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli recommended that the President issue the Citizenship Ordinance via Cabinet decision. For the past two years, the parliament has been debating a Citizenship Bill.
The citizenship-related legislation has taken effect as a result of the parliament’s dissolution on Saturday.
